SRB On the Beginning

Founder Sarah Black Discusses Adopt-A-Gay's Humble Beginnings

"'It was the best of times it was the worst of times':* I took in several homeless gay and lesbian peeps. There was also my roommate; we had about 7 of us living in a small 2 bedroom apartment. At times there was probably about 14 of us crashed in the apartment by morning. We all got along fine and shared duties around the crowded lil' apartment. Only one rule was placed and enforced and that was 'no one screws in my bed....other than that everything goes.'

"Of course, someone had to break that rule and sent me into a rage and so we had it out and shortly after that there were only a few of us left living there. I am such a killjoy. Soon after all that happened management was pissed at us and told us we had to leave. A few weeks after that I found myself driving to Louisiana with Monique. And, so began a long and awesome frienship that endures to this very day. I got adopted by Monique's mom, as well. I got a good deal out of that, huh?"
